]]>The properties include areas north of Tistedalsgata and the machine hall for paper machines 4 and 5 (“PM4-5”). NND is in the planning phase of the decommissioning project and hand over of the properties is expected in the second half of 2028. Saugbrugs will lease the properties until hand over and has certain obligations related to this.
“We are very pleased to have found a solution together with NND that will facilitate an orderly and well managed decommissioning process. We continue to review a rebuild of PM6 for production of SC magazine paper and kraftliner. We expect to provide an update on these processes during the second quarter this year,” says Geir Drangsland, CEO of Norske Skog.
The transaction will be carried out as an asset sale and is subject to customary conditions and public granting of the consideration amount. The transaction is expected to generate an accounting gain, recognized as other operating income, of NOK 320 million in the first quarter and estimated at NOK 330 million in the second quarter of 2026. Net payment of approximately NOK 720 million is expected in the second quarter of 2026.
“We have been very impressed by the openness and willingness Norske Skog has shown to understand our needs. We will now seek the final approvals required to complete the transaction and continue with the planning process for the decommissioning project. The project will generate significant activity in Halden over the coming decades, and we aim to be a strong supporter of the community and our neighbours, carrying out the project in a safe, secure and responsible manner,” says Pål Mikkelsen, Director of NND.

]]>Norske Skog Bruck slashed scope 1 and 2 CO₂ emissions from 400 to 250 kg CO₂e/tonne (2022–2024) by investing in the new K9 bio boiler, fueled by household waste, and reducing gas usage for mill energy.
"Our upgraded K8 power-to-heat boiler, converted by InoPower, now absorbs 25 MW during surplus periods, boosting renewable integration without compromising reliability," says Janisch.
This is Norske Skog Bruck's contribution: more renewables in the grid, lower emissions, and unwavering security of supply. Constant improvement drives us forward.
]]>Norske Skog Skogn currently emits approximately 170,000 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ annually from the flue gas of its steam plant. Carbon Centric aims to build a capture facility that will remove a significant portion of these emissions – around 100,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year. The captured CO₂ will either be sent for permanent storage or used as a raw material in industrial applications and products.
“Carbon capture at Skogn is an exciting next step in our work toward more sustainable industrial production. Together with Carbon Centric, we can contribute to solutions that actually remove CO₂ from the atmosphere and make the Skogn mill carbon negative,” says Håvard Busklein, Managing Director at Norske Skog Skogn.
Next steps
The project will undergo an environmental impact assessment in accordance with the Norwegian regulations. The consultation documents outline the project’s purpose, planned location, and the environmental topics to be assessed. The most central issues will include air and water emissions, as well as noise.
After the six-week consultation period, feedback will be reviewed and summarized before the Directorate for Environment (Miljødirektoratet) finalizes the assessment program. This will form the basis for the full environmental impact assessment.
Participation and consultation
The purpose of the consultation is to ensure broad participation and give affected parties the opportunity to provide input. Once the assessment is completed, it will also be released for public consultation before final approval by the Directorate for Environment.
The process is expected to take approximately two years. It is uncertain when the carbon capture facility will be in operations.
]]>Each year, around 850–900,000 m³ of timber is harvested in Trøndelag – only 30–35% of the annual growth. The potential is significant: harvesting could increase to more than 1.2 million m³ without compromising the forest’s sustainable role. When timber is processed in the region, its value increases 12–14 times. Raw material worth NOK 1,000 becomes products worth up to NOK 14,000 for society.
At the same time, we see positive trends in biodiversity and climate benefits – the forests absorb more CO₂ than Trøndelag’s total emissions.
Håvard Busklein, Managing Director, Norske Skog Skogn, says:
My message to politicians is clear: To realize this potential, we need predictable framework conditions, better infrastructure, and an active policy to utilize the forest’s renewable resources, which also means that Norske Skog Skogn participates in the emissions trading system (ETS).
Politicians from all the major parties were present at the discussion.
Wood Work Cluster has made a Norwegian news article about the discussion: Vellykket valgkampmøte på Norske Skog Skogn - WoodWorks! Cluster

]]>In collaboration with ANDRITZ, our low-capex project enables production of bulky, bright, and sustainable book paper using 100% virgin fibre and our premium thermomechanical pulp. With successful trial runs and industry-leading low CO2 emissions, NOR Book is set to meet the stable European demand for wood-containing book paper (~400,000 tonnes/year).
The Managing Director at Skogn, Håvard Busklein, shares: “The project team’s creativity and entrepreneurial spirit have paved the way for this milestone. NOR Book strengthens our competitiveness, targets stable markets, and positions us to become a top three supplier of book paper in Europe.”
This transition will gradually reduce newsprint exports to Asia while maintaining seamless newsprint deliveries. We’re excited about the positive feedback from customers and can’t wait to deliver NOR Book to the market!
]]>Deliveries of containerboard to customers will start during the second quarter of 2025. Capacity utilisation is expected to reach 50-60% towards the end of 2025 and full utilisation of 95% during the first half of 2027. The production will be fully based on recycled paper. The mill will have capacities of 550 000 tonnes of containerboard and 330 000 tonnes of newsprint, making Golbey one of the largest mills in the European paper and packaging industry.
The Golbey mill will contribute to the region’s sustainable development by sorting and recycling more than one million tonnes of wastepaper sourced from regions around the mill. In addition, the Golbey mill will supply Green Valley Energie with waste to produce green and cost-efficient energy for external sale and to Golbey’s production processes. This contributes both to the mill’s cost position and environmental profile. The mill will also generate long-term jobs and industrial activity in the region. At full capacity utilization of 880,000 tonnes, the Golbey mill is expected to generate around NOK 5 billion in annual revenue in 2027/28, based on current packaging and publication paper prices.
“The containerboard machine at Golbey will enable long-term value creation for all our stakeholders. Increased focus on environmentally friendly products and the continued growth of e-commerce have created a significant demand for renewable packaging. This aligns perfectly with the production of recycled containerboard at Golbey, which will be cost-leading and environmentally friendly,” says Yves Bailly, Managing Director of Norske Skog Golbey.

We now look forward to continue our operations under new ownership, and to work closely with our new owners to explore future opportunities at the mill site”, said Patrick Dooley, Managing Director of Norske Skog Boyer.
The Norske Skog Boyer mill is situated in Tasmania and has a production capacity of 150 000 tonnes of newsprint and 135 000 tonnes of LWC magazine paper. In dialogue with mill management and representatives of the Boyer workforce we have been very impressed with their knowledge and commitment to the business. The sale follows a broad and structured process over a period of more than two years. The sale strengthens Norske Skog’s balance sheet and liquidity position towards ongoing strategic projects.
The transaction is a sale of 100% of the share capital in Norske Skog Industries Australia Limited which is the holding company for all of Norske Skog’s Australasian activities. Norske Skog will discontinue the reporting segment publication paper Australasia in its results for the fourth quarter of 2024. The purchase price is based on an enterprise value of approximately NOK 190 million and is subject to customary adjustments for cash, debt and working capital. Completion of the sale is expected to occur during the first quarter of 2025, subject to customary closing conditions, and no gain or loss is expected to be recognised in the first quarter of 2025 as a result of the transaction.
Following the sale, Norske Skog will have four mills, all situated in Europe, with a total combined capacity of 760 000 tonnes of containerboard, 840 000 tonnes of newsprint, 200 000 tonnes of SC magazine paper, and 265 000 tonnes of LWC magazine paper.

]]>The new product has undergone an extensive certification and analysis process at a leading laboratory in Germany. This process has ensured that the product meets the strictest requirements for safe use in direct contact with food, providing customers with extra assurance that the packaging contains no harmful substances.
At launch, Norske Skog has already secured an annual sales volume of over NOK 50 million and expects this to double in the coming months. The main market for the new product is Europe, but Norske Skog also sees significant opportunities in the growing markets of Asia.
The shift to using fresh wood fiber is a direct result of the phasing out of recycled paper, which can contain contaminants incompatible with stringent food contact paper requirements. By using fresh Nordic spruce fiber, Norske Skog eliminates the risk of such contaminants and can thus offer a safer product to its customers.
Traditional food packaging paper is often coated with plastic or other chemicals to ensure barrier properties. Norske Skog’s new product is 100% plastic-free, without coatings, and thus represents an important step toward a more environmentally friendly and sustainable future.

"Norske Skog will initiate a main study that will form the basis for a final board decision to build a BCTMP-plant at Saugbrugs in Halden. The net investment in BCTMP production will range between NOK 1.5 to 2 billion (EUR 140-180 million). The construction period is expected to last for two years starting in the second half of 2025. We expect to achieve a return on net investment of more than 20%. This will be the first significant investment at Saugbrugs outside of publication paper in modern times," says Norske Skog's CEO Geir Drangsland.
These investments represent the latest initiative in enhancing the circular and industrial ecosystems at the Saugbrugs mill. The BCTMP production will be based on fresh fibre, and the mill has already access to adequate energy capacity. Norske Skog Saugbrugs investment will exploit existing machinery, equipments and infrastructure; thus, reducing the total investment with approximately 50% compared to a pure greenfield investment case. There will be minor adjustments to the existing infrastructure such as in- and outbound distribution systems, raw material processing machinery and equipment, in addition to the waste-water treatment plant.
Saugbrugs will apply to appropriate authority for electrical grid access and all necessary emission permits, building construction permits and other regulatory necessities. Final investment decisions are planned in the first half of 2025, and the start of BCTMP production is planned in the first half of 2027, and full utilisation is expected in first half of 2028.
“It is gratifying for equipment suppliers, lenders, wood and other raw materials suppliers, shareholders, and customers that we are investing in and establishing a plant for bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp at Saugbrugs. The new revenue streams from mechanical pulp, along with the production of SC paper at Saugbrugs, will make the factory more profitable and robust, ensuring job security,” concludes Norske Skog’s CEO Geir Drangsland.
